Saint-Pierre was Martinique's cultural capital until 8 May 1902, when a burning cloud from Mount Pelée destroyed the town in barely a minute. Today you can see the ruins of the theatre, the cell of the prisoner Cyparis and the memorial, and dive on the ships sunk that day.
Above the town rises Mount Pelée; on the road north is the Depaz rum distillery, and closer to Fort-de-France the Balata garden. The beaches are of dark volcanic sand.
Highlights: Ruins of Saint-Pierre · Depaz distillery · Wreck diving · Anse Couleuvre.
