Climate
Drier and sunnier than the other two cirques; cool at night (around 10 °C in winter).

The southern cirque, reached by the famous RN5 from Saint-Louis: about 35 km and some 400 bends, tunnels cut through the rock, 1–1.5 hours at the wheel. In the centre is the small town of Cilaos, at 1,200 m, known for its thermal springs, local wine, lentils and embroidery.

Cilaos is the main base for the climb up Piton des Neiges (starting at Le Bloc) and for canyoning: Fleurs Jaunes, Bras Rouge and other descents. The trail to Mafate over the Col du Taïbit also starts here.

Because of the road, it is not worth coming for a single day — stay at least two nights.
