Mountain climate: hot days, cool nights, fog after midday.

The only cirque without a road. About 800 people live in the îlets, small hamlets on plateaux: Marla, La Nouvelle, Roche-Plate, Grand-Place, Aurère and others. Supplies and post arrive by helicopter; electricity comes from solar panels.

You enter Mafate on foot: over the Col des Bœufs (from Salazie — the shortest way), over the Col du Taïbit from Cilaos, up the bed of the Rivière des Galets, or from Maïdo and Dos d'Âne. You sleep in gîtes — book them ahead; in the dry season they fill up weeks in advance.

A night in Mafate is the highlight of many trips to Réunion.
