Saint-Denis is the administrative capital and home to the main airport, Roland-Garros. The town deserves half a day: the Creole villas of Rue de Paris, the Jardin de l'État, the Grand Mosque, Hindu temples and the Barachois seafront. There are no swimming beaches here.
From Saint-Denis it is easy to drive up to the Cap Noir lookout above the Mafate cirque (the Dos d'Âne area) — one of the most accessible trails with a view of the cirque.
