About the area: The east
- Best for
- Lovers of greenery, waterfalls and photography; a day trip
- How many nights
- 1–2
- Climate
- The wettest part of the island — and the greenest.
The windward coast takes the trade winds, so it is humid, green and full of water: waterfalls, pools in the ravines, rivers for rafting. There are fewer tourists than in the west, and less accommodation — the east is usually seen in a day.
The highlights: Anse des Cascades, a bay of waterfalls and palms; the Route des Laves near Sainte-Rose, where solidified flows cross the road; the church of Notre-Dame-des-Laves, which the lava flowed around in 1977; and the vanilla plantations of Saint-André and Bras-Panon. From here, too, the road climbs to Grand Étang lake and the Bébour-Bélouve forest — the start for the Trou de Fer.
Highlights: Anse des Cascades · The Route des Laves and Notre-Dame-des-Laves · Vanilla at Bras-Panon · Bassin la Paix and Bassin la Mer · Grand Étang lake.
