Where to stay on Réunion
The most practical plan is to change base 3–4 times: the west (Saint-Gilles or Saint-Leu) for the lagoon, Cilaos and Salazie for the cirques, a night in a gîte in Mafate, and a night at Plaine des Cafres or Saint-Pierre before the volcano. Staying in the west the whole time and driving up for the day means many hours at the wheel.
Types of accommodation
- Hotels and residences — mostly in the west and in Saint-Pierre.
- Chambres d'hôtes and gîtes ruraux — guest houses all over the island, often with a “table d'hôte” dinner.
- Gîtes de montagne — mountain huts on the trails (Mafate, Piton des Neiges, the volcano, Bélouve): dormitories, dinner and breakfast. They are booked in advance through the island's official booking service; in the dry season they fill up weeks ahead.
